The territory of present Pingxiang City successively belonged to the Wu Kingdom and the Chu Kingdom in Eastern Zhou Dynasty (770BC-221BC). In the year of 267, Pingxiang County was set here, and in the Tang Dynasty (618-907), it was exalted to a prefecture. In March 1970, Pingxiang was a provincial city under Jiangxi Province.
