Guangxi Friendship Pass


The Friendship Pass, known as 友谊关 You yi guan, is located in the southwest of Pingxiang City in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The pass  is near the border between China's Guangxi and Vietnam's Lạng Sơn Province. China National Route 1A starts near to this pass,and China National Highway 322 runs from here to Guangxi Province and Hunan Province.

Named Jilingguan at first,this pass was originally built in the Han Dynasty(208 BC-202 AD) as the first gate of the border.The pass was rebuilt in the early Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) with the name of "South Suppressing Pass"(镇南关 Zhennan Pass). In the early Qing Dynasty, the town where the pass located was changed to Nanguan(南关). In 1953, the pass was changed to Nanguan Pass.In 1965, its name was changed again to the current Friendship Pass, reflecting the close political, military, and economic ties between the People's Republic of China and North Vietnam during the then-ongoing Vietnam War.


Features

In the third year of Emperor Yongzheng (1725),in the Qing Dynasty(1645-1911), the first floor of Jianguan Building was destroyed by the French army during the Sino-French War. So the Qing general Su Yuanchun led the people to build more than 130 forts, camps and castles on the border, install cannons and other artillery, repair Sanguan (zhennan, Shuikou, Ping), set 56 platforms, 64 passes, 500 kilometers of road construction ,which made these were connected into a defense system.And then the General rebuilt the second floor of the Pass Building. The pass was destroyed in the War of Against Japanese Aggression. After the founding of the China People's Republic,  it was converted into an arched city gate and a three-story building in 1965,. Chen Yi wrote the inscription "Friendship Pass."

With over 2,000 years history,the Friendship Pass is one of the most famous nine passes in ancient China. Nowadays,it is listed as the  4A national scenic area to opened visitors.
