Tianmen Mountain


Tianmen Mountain,  with a height of 1,518 meters, is about 8 km from the downtown area of Zhangjiajie. Tianmen Mountain got its name for the Tianmen Cave, a natural karst cave across the mountain. The top part of the mountain is relatively flat, and is filled with old trees, winding vines, mosses, stalagmites and clints, with an area of 494 acres.
The rare mountain top scenery makes it the most beautiful sky garden all over the world, and a heaven fairyland. Due to this, it was approved as a national forest park in 1997, namely, Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park. The plank road and glass skywalks built along the cliffs will give you a special experience.

Tianmen Mountain Cableway
Tianmen Mountain Cable Way, with a length of 7,455 meters, is the longest cableway in the world.  Starting in the City Garden in the downtown area, and ending on the top of the mountain, the cable way looks like a rainbow hanging on the sky, as well as a dragon riding through the clouds. It has 98 cars and 57 brackets altogether (including 3 rescuing brackets), all of which are original imported facilities from POMA, the French corporation. The cable capacity is limited to 1,000 passengers per hour, and it will take you 28 minutes for a single trip. Try to avoid the high season, or you may wait in line for several hours.
Glass-Skywalk on Guigu Plank Road
Guigu Plank Road is embedded in the vertical mountain cliff and hangs above the Ghost Cave, hence its name.The length of the path is 1600m with an average elevation of 1400m. 
The ghost-valley plank road is located at the scenic area of Looking-for-the-wonderland with a whole length of 800 m and suspended from the cliff more than 1400 m above sea level on the upper side of the Ghost-valley Cave. Here your hearts will be agitated by the extreme shock and stimulation.
 Part of the plank road, there is a 60-meter-long, 1.6-meter-wide  glass skywalk with a glass-bottom viewing platform for the intrepid travelers to try. The glass skywalk is the essence of a tour to Tianmen Mountain. For those who are inclined to adventures, this will be a good chance. On sunny days, the blue sky and white clouds reflect over the path. You will be pleased with the walking trip over the clouds before feeling trembled at the transparent glasses below your feet. On cloudy days, the view of the glass corridor appearing in the mist will give you a surprise. Now there are three glass skywalks in the east, west and Panlong Cliff respectively. 
Glass Skywalk on Coiled Dragon Cliff
Coiled Dragon Cliff is the newest glass skywalk on Tianmen Mountain after the glass-bottom viewing platform and Plank Road. Ever since its opening on August 1st, 2016, ‘Coiled Dragon Cliff’ has been praised as ‘the oriental skywalk’. It is located on the west sightseeing route of Tianmen Mountain, 100 meters (328 feet) long, 1.6 meters (5 feet) wide, and 1430 meters (4,690 feet) high. Visitors are asked to wear shoes covers before walking on the ‘Coiled Dragon Cliff’, so as to keep the glass skywalk clean and completely transparent.  
Bonsai Garden
Tianmen Mountain  is an integrated synclinal geological unit which has the landform of middle-mountain karst platform with peak groups and canyons. The top of Tianmen mountain is a cliff sight of karst platform. The karst hillocks and karrens spread wildly to form wonders of stone forests in the air. Moreover, with moss spreading all over the ground, wild vines twining and twisting, what come into sight are natural bonsais like grand gardens which were as if created by the immortals. The tourists can relish the natural wonders and feel the miracles of the Creator to their hearts' content.
Tianmen Mountain Tunnel Elevator
The first mountain tunnel elevator in the world, Tianmen Mountain Tunnel Elevator was officially opened to the public on April 25, 2015. The total height is 897 meters (2943 feet), with a lifting height of 340 meters (1115 feet). The one-way maximum capacity is 3600 persons per hour. Thanks for the elevator, visitors now can go from the Tianmen Cave to the top of Tianmen Mountain, and have a stunning panoramic view of the mountains.
Tianmen Cave
Tianmen cave is a natural mountain-penetrating karst cave hanging on the towering cliff, with a height of 131.5 meters, a width of 57 meters, a depth of 60 meters. Tianmen Cave was formed no later than 48 A.D. It is a natural water-eroded cave with the highest elevation in the world (at an altitude of 1300 meters). It is actually a big hole in the mountain but people call it a cave and it has become a major attraction on Tianmen Mountain.
In 1999, pilots from Russia, America, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Czech Republic and Republic of Lithuania performed an extremely thrilling midair acrobatic show. They flew three airplanes through the cave. The live telecast drew an estimated audience of 800 million people worldwide. In 2011, Jeb Corliss transcended the limit of humans and flew through Tianmen Cave in the wingsuit. The cave becomes the unique sight under heaven and breeds the profound and grand heaven culture of Fairy Mountain in the local area. 
Heaven-linking Avenue
It is Avenue toward Heaven. Also called 99 Bending Road or Big Gate Road, it is one of the most dangerous roads in China. The road was built in 1998 with a total length 10.77 kilometers. The bending road, with 99 turnings one after another, was said to be the world’s first road wonder. You can admire the thrilling winding road panoramically from the cable car. If you’d like to go to the mountaintop by this road, it is safe to take the shuttle bus of Tianmen Mountain scenic area.
Tianmen Mountain Temple
As the Buddhism center of western Hunan, Tianmen Mountain Temple was first built in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The temple was rebuilt in 2002, with an area of 5 acres, and featured by the overhanging eaves and uplifting angles. There are many exquisite halls and pagodas carved with sculptures. Tianmen Mountain Temple temple enshrines one of the five relics of Sakyamuni Buddha in China. 
Forest Sightseeing Cable Car
In order that tourists may enjoy the scenery on the summit at a higher angle and with a broader vision and numerous Buddhists may reach Tian Men Mountain Temple in the north of the summit faster with ease, Tian Men Mountain scenic area has built a summit sightseeing hanging chair cableway starting from Yunmeng Fairy Summit and ending at the Cherry Bay with a whole length of 800 m. Both the design of the car and adjustment speed render the tourists with full time and space for touring the summit and one feels as if he is walking on the garden in the air with absolute satisfaction.
Yunmeng Summit
Yunmeng Summit, 1518.6 m above sea level, is the summit of Tianmen Mountain. Looking around there, the sixteen peaks of Tianmen Mountain are different in shape; looking afar, the scenery of Wulingyuan comes into view; looking into the city, the new appearance of Zhang Jiajie is taken in at a glance.
Tianmen Academy
Tianmen Academy is another attraction. It has delivered advanced education since ancient times. Many high ranking officials and scholars were brought up here. Emperor Timur of the Yuan Dynasty in the mid 14th century thought highly of the educational achievements in the Tianmen Mountain area. He wrote an inscription about Tianmen Academy to honour the local college.Tianmen Academy is now a senior high school.

Travel Tips
Add: 8 km south of downtown Zhangjiajie,Hunan China. 
Transport: visitors can walk 5 minutes to the Tianmen Mountain Cableway station. visitors can also take bus No.10,6 at Zhangjiajie Railway Station, or bus No.4 at Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport to Tianmen Mountain Cableway Station.
Entrance Fee:  CNY 258 including the cable car and sightseeing shuttle bus
Note: The entrance fee does not include the small cableway on the mountain top (CNY 25 p.p one way), and the tunnel elevator (CNY32 p.p one way).
