What to do?

Mid-Autumn Festival : Mid-Autumn Festival is the second biggest holiday in China, and it usually falls at the middle or end of September. It often falls around the time of the October 1 National Day holidays, and it becomes a part of the "golden week" holidays. It is the 15th day of the eighth lunar month.

You can expect large crowds if you come during this time, but you'll also be able to experience the modern Chinese festivities and the traditional celebrations of the ethnic people. Try the local moon cakes. They are like small fruitcakes made from the fruits and nuts of the season.

See Tujia people in Zhangjiajie: The ethnic minority has lived there for centuries. They have their own special customs for celebrating. During the evening of the Mid-Autumn Festival, the people might go out to watermelon patches to steal them and give them to couples with no children as a way to send good wishes for a child. The best place to visit is Tujia Folk Customs Park in Zhangjiajie Downtown.

Explore Tianmen Mountain: Another place to see the fall scenery all around is Tianmenshan. Most people feel the mountain is the main attraction of the whole park. It is called Tianmenshan (Heaven Gate Mountain) because there is a big hole in the middle of the mountain that looks like a big door in the sky. The hole is 131 meters high, 57 meters wide, and 60 meters long.

You can hike to the hole or climb all the way to the top of the mountain. Stair climbing to the top takes about two or three hours, and it might be too difficult if you are out of shape. At the top, there is a glass sidewalk that stretches 600 meters along the side of the peak a kilometer above the valley floor.

To avoid a hike, you can ride a cable car to the big hole or go all the way to the top. The cable ride is included in the entry ticket. A ride to the top of Tianmenshan takes half an hour.

Enjoy the scenery at Tianzishan: Tianzishan is a mountain in Wulingyuan Scenic Area. It is a place to see the colorful trees and enjoy cool hiking weather. The top of the mountain is more than a kilometer (4,140 feet) above sea level.

It is also a place to do wildlife watching. The mountain has a natural wildlife reserve that covers 67 square kilometers (16,000 acres). You can hike up, but there is also a long tramway.
