Yang Family Ancestral Hall

Yang Family Ancestral Hall, located between the East Gate City Tower and the North Gate City Tower in Tuojiang Town of Fenghuang County,  is one of the nine major attractions in  of Fenghuang Ancient City.

Covering an area of 770 square meters, the Yang Family Ancestral Hall was in 1836 built by Yang Fang, who was served as Prince's Teacher in the Qing Dynasty (1645-1911). Yang family was once a very prosperous family in Fenghuang County. Therefore, the size of the Yang Family Ancestral Hall was not inferior to that of ordinary temples.

The gate of the Yang Family Ancestral Hall is opened diagonally to face Tuojiang River. According to Feng Shui theory, it can make the ancestors industry prosperous and flourish forever, which just like the water of Tuojiang River flowing continuously.

Entering the gate, you can look up to see the bull head and the bat wood carving on the second door. The ancestral hall is a typical courtyard building with a wooden structure. It has two floors, consisting of a gate, a stage, a corridor, a gallery, and a main hall.

Yang Family Ancestral Hall was once used to be a public place in Fenghuang Town for people to listen to book lectures and watch operas. Mr. Huang Yongyu and other celebrities in Fenghuang Town often watched operas here when they were in childhood. When the opera was performed, the gongs and drums were noisy, it was lively and extraordinary.

Today, the two-sided house in theYang Family Ancestral Hall has become a small exhibition hall for Miao's daily necessities and crafts. At the same time, in order to carry forward and inherit the ancient folk art of Fenghuang Ancient Town,  the wonderful folk performance  will be showed every day on the ancient stage of the Yangjia Ancestral Hall.
