Wulei Mountain


Wulei Mountain,known as Wuleishan 五雷山 in Chinese, is a one of top Taoist Mountains in Hunan Province.Located in the 48-Stockade Scenic Area in Cili County, Wulei Mountain was Praised as" the South Wudang Mountain" in ancient times,and it was opened to tourists in 1994.

History of Wulei Mountain

With 976 meters above sea level, Wulei Mountain, originally named Dawei Mountain in the Tang Dynasty( 618-907).It was recorded that the first Taoist temple was built by King Jing(General Li Jing) in the Tang Dyansty.And Zhang Dui,a minister in the Yuan Dynasty,once rebuilt more Taoist Temples in Wulei Mountain so that it became the biggest Taoist mountain in south of China during the Ming Dynasty(1368-1644).And there were 36 palaces,72 temples,48 stockades in the mountainous during the Qing Dynasty(1644-1911).


What to see in Wulei Mountain?

As the largest Taoist Mountain in south China,as well as the 4-A class national scenic area, Wulei Mountain is famous for its ancient architecture, Taoist Culture and picturesque sightseeings.

The Golden Palace

There are 36 palaces,72 temples,48 stockades in the mountainous.The Golden Palace is the largest constructure complex in Wulei Mountain. Standing on the top of the mountain, the Golden Palace was originally built by Zhang Dui in the early Ming Dynasty.Covered with blue glazed tiles and yellow and blue carvings on the roof, the Golden Palace is the most representative wooden structure on the mountain. In the hall,it is worshipped the sculpture of Emperor Jade( also called Emperor Zhenwu ) which was made by a Ming Dynasty artisan.


The Sacrifice Rock

With its dangerous sightseeing, the Rock is a major attraction on Wulei Mountain.According to the legend, It is this place that Master Zhengwu jumped off and went to heaven.The pavillion on the rock is also named " Flying-up Pavillion" so as to commemorate Master Zhengwu.

The Condor Rock

According to legend,Emperor Jade once led the five Sounders to serve the five evil dragons,and he ordered the one of the five Sounders to saty in Wulei Mountain so as to stop the evil dragons again.After a long time,the sounder became the rock to stand there.And it is the patron saint of the Wulei Mountain,as well as a symbol of strength and justice.
