The old courtyard was built in the early years of Qing Emperor Yongzheng in the Qing Dynasty. With over 300 years history,  it is the ancestral home of the Tian clan.  The architectural style is the Sihe Patio, the wall-mounted Tujia architecture, the Tujia Garden and the Tujia Stilt Building. It is a typical soil. The family residence is also the best preserved Tujia ancient house in the entire Xiangxi area, and is known as the “first house of Tujia”.
The old courtyard has more than 30 large and small rooms, three-storey halls and four patios. It faces south and is symmetrical. The layout is rigorous and seamless.
