Hangwu Miao Village


Hangwu Miao Village is located in Guzhang County, west of Hunan Province. It's about  130 km away from Zhangjiajie City. Hangwu is the transliteration of Miao language and it means beautiful village by the valley and the stream. This village is the hometown of some famous Chinese folk singers. The most representative ones include He Jiguang and Song Zuying.
There are about 300 hundreds families in the village with a population of about 1200. The villagers still live in wooden Diaojiaolou houses (vernacular pillar-supported dwellings). Here you can not only experience the unique folk customs of the Miao, but also admire fantastic natural landscape. In the scenic spot, streams are crossing to each other; deep valleys, spectacular waterfalls, grand mountain ranges, ancient trees and special flowers, precious birds and animals can be seen everywhere. You will have a better understanding to the Miao nationality and their daily life after visiting this village.

The village has the largest drum of the Miao Nationality, which was exhibited in 2010 Shanghai World Expo. Drum is the soul of the Miao people. They believe that drum-dancing can bring prosperity.

Best time to visit: April to October is the best time to visit the village, when the weather is not too cold.
How to get there: You can take a bus at Guzhang County for about 8 minutes to get there. Or take a bus at Jishou Bus Station and then as the driver to drop you off at Hangwu Miao Village.
